How can we improve access to finance for European companies in green sectors?

1 June 2016, Brussels

Access to finance can be difficult for companies in environmental sectors due to limited information or understanding of new business models or the issues driving them. In addition, there are also challenges in getting from innovation to the market.

Therefore, reliable access to a variety of funding sources is crucial for European companies in green sectors and for the development of the circular economy. A number of grant schemes and public initiatives at national and European level, such as Horizon 2020, provide support to research, demonstration and sometimes pre-commercial activities.

However, sustainable growth of the environmental sectors and for the circular economy requires stronger involvement from private sector capital. In this sense, new financing schemes developed by the European Investment Bank group and the European Commission, such as Horizon2020 Innovfin or EFSI, provide new funding opportunities and structures, beyond grant schemes, that range from debt and equity schemes to advisory services and can be the catalyst to bringing innovators and financial institutions together, to overcome the so-called ‘Valley of Death’ between demonstration and commercialisation of innovative products and services. The Investment Plan focuses on mobilising and supporting investments in the real economy as well as creating an investment friendly environment. Venue: The Egg, Rue Bara, 175, 1070 Brussels

Green Week 2016 Partner event: 'Social Innovation for Accelerating Transition to Sustainable Cities'

30 May 2016, Brussels

Cities are homes of innovative solutions and alternative social arrangements. Social innovations come in many forms, including nature-based solutions and people-based solutions that hand in hand transform our cities, district-by-district, one infrastructure service at a time. These actor-networks that we call transition initiatives come in various shapes and sizes, led by actors from public, private and civil society sectors or spanning across sectoral divides, and have become increasingly visible in many European cities. Transition initiatives as makers of social innovations in cities foster new relationships, new institutions and, ultimately, can contribute to the emergence of new urban realities: the sharing economy, green low-carbon economies, and new sustainable lifestyles.

  • Opening
  • Session I: THE KNOWNS – what makes cities accelerate to low-carbon futures?
  • Session II: THE CATALYSTS – power, politics and momentum of urban social innovation
  • Roundtable discussion with questions from audience

Registration is compulsory and will be open until Thursday 26 May. Venue: Committee of the Regions Van Maerlant Street n°2, 1040 Brussels (EC building VM2 - room VMA 1 - 2nd floor)

Advances and Progress in Drug Design Conference

16-17 February 2015, London, United Kingdom

The drug is most commonly an organic small molecule that activates or inhibits the function of a biomolecule such as a protein, which in turn results in a therapeutic benefit to the patient. Drug design involves the designing of small molecules that are complementary in shape and charge to the biomolecular target with which they interact and therefore will bind to it. Drug design, is the inventive process of finding new medications based on the knowledge of the biological target.

As science and technology is advancing, drug designing has moved from traditional methods to advanced methods like computer aided drug designing and computational techniques. This informative event will focus on the recent developments and growth drivers in drug design.

High profile scientists from pharma companies and biotech organisations will be speaking about structure based drug designing, fragment based drug designing, computer based drug designing, pharmacokinetics, polypharmacology and metabolism in drug designing.
